Handmade

Handmade – but by whose Hands?

“Handmade” evokes loving craftsmanship, time, dedication, and quality. And indeed – almost all clothes are handmade. But the difference lies not in the technique, but in the hands that sew them.

Are they the hands of a passionate seamstress who works on a unique piece with dedication – or the hands of an underpaid woman in Bangladesh, who sits in a stuffy factory hall, works overtime, and barely earns enough to feed her family?

The Reality behind Fast Fashion

The fast fashion industry thrives on low prices – and these prices don’t come about without reason. They are often made possible at the expense of those who produce the clothing. Wages in many production countries are far below the subsistence level. Working hours of 12 to 16 hours per day are not uncommon. Safety standards? Often non-existent. The collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh in 2013, which killed over 1,100 people, was not a tragic isolated incident, but a symptom of a system that prioritizes profit over human lives.

Supply Chain Laws – a Beginning, but not an End

In some countries – including Germany – supply chain laws have now been introduced that oblige companies to respect human rights throughout their supply chains. That is an important step. However, these laws often only apply to large companies and are difficult to monitor. Many violations remain invisible because the paths of clothing are complicated and opaque.

Our Role as Consumers

It’s easy to point fingers at large fashion chains. But in the end, we are part of the chain. Our purchasing decisions determine which production methods survive. Every euro we spend on clothing is a vote: for a system that allows exploitation – or for one that pays fairly, produces safely, and thinks sustainably.

Of course, no one can do everything perfectly. But we can do better. We can support brands that operate transparently. We can buy less, more consciously, and more durably.

Because “handmade” is not automatically good. It depends on whose hands the clothing is made in – and what value we give to these hands.
